Lucky to escape death after fall from height

A company has been ordered to pay nearly £15,000 after an employee was “lucky to escape death” when he fell from height at work and fractured his skull.

The employee also fractured his shoulder and a number of ribs while working for Pontiac Coil Europe Ltd in Nottingham.

The employee, who was 62 at the time of the incident, was dismantling the mezzanine floor surface at the company’s premises when he fell from a height of 2.4 metres.

The Company pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 6(3) and 4(1) of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court for the incident that occurred on 25 June 2009. The company was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay £4,867 costs for failing to properly plan the work, or take suitable and sufficient measures to prevent Mr Cole falling.
